Leah White is a singer-songwriter who started a movement with the family music genre because she refused to believe that there should be a division between children and adult music. Playing guitar, piano, writing songs, and singing from a young age gave her the ability to start writing songs for everyone in the family to enjoy. She released two albums as a solo artist, “Cake for Dinner” (2007) and “A White Christmas” (2009). As her audience grew and the success of her live performances increased, Leah decided to form Leah White and the Magic Mirrors, with whom she released “Sprinkler” in 2010. Leah White has won a stream of honors with her music for children and families: she won the Nickelodeon Parents’ Choice Award for Best Entertainer & Music in 2009 and her most recent album, “Sprinkler”, won the prestigious and coveted Parents’ Choice Foundation Award for 2010, which is a national honor that is respected by both parents and educators. The Houston Zoo recently made Leah’s song “Beautiful Day” their Official Zoo theme song and she has had numerous appearances on TV and radio. In addition to releasing “Houston: Our Roots are Strong”, she plans to release a dvd of her Music Videos in 2011. Leah lives in Houston with her husband Brian and three young girls.
If you need to know something about cultural activities or summertime fun for kids and families in Houston, Sarah Gish is the one you need to tune into! Through her company Gish Creative, she began publishing her popular free weekly e-newsletter, GISH PICKS, as well as the only stand-alone guide to Houston summer day camps and classes for kids and teens, THE SUMMER BOOK. Sarah is also a preservationist: she formed Save Our Landmarks, a group that helped get the River Oaks and Alabama Theatres and their shopping centers designated as City Landmarks in 2007. Her passion for those theatres was strong because she managed the River Oaks Theatre in the 1990s and she organized a FotoFest exhibition of photos of historic Houston theatre taken by local photographers Bob and Marvin Bailey. Her work in preservation was acknowledged when she was asked to serve on the City of Houston Archeological and Historical Commission’s Education Sub-Committee in 2009, a committee of which she is still a member. Sarah is also an artist who has shown her work at several galleries and museums and she writes “Gish at the Movies” for 002+ Magazine each month and has been a contributor to Houston Family Magazine, Texas Family Magazine, Texas Meetings + Events Magazine, My Table Magazine, and www.glasstire.com. Sarah lives in Houston with her husband, childhood friend Stuart Buchanan, and her two boys.
